Liz Kettle's Class 2013

Sulmona,  ITALY

 Abruzzo Travelogue

With Liz Kettle

28th August to 3th Sept 2013

Liz Kettle

My work is about story; personal and family stories as well as stories of humankind and the earth, stories that surround and touch us.

I choose to work in fabric and stitch because I believe they connect us and draw us closer in a way that cannot be achieved with traditional art materials alone. I use a multitude of techniques from traditional quilting to unusual mixed media applications to tell and support the story in my art. Because each story is unique my work feels very eclectic but each piece has a common connection found in my love of history, layers, grids and texture.

I am passionate about teaching and am co-author of two books;  Fabric Embellishing: the Basics and Beyond and Threads: the Basics and Beyond. I have articles published in Quilter’s HomeQuilting ArtsQuilting Arts In Stitches and Cloth Paper Scissors Studios. I have also appeared in the PBS show Quilting Arts TV.

 Abruzzo Travelogue:

A Mixed-Media Adventure

Arrival Date: 28th August 2013

Class starts 29th Aug

Departure Date: 3rd Sept 2013

Deadline for this class is: 19th June 2013

Imagine a book which gently calls you to open its soft, textured cover, to explore the memories found within the pages; scents, textures and images of a beautiful place, an experience. The travelogue of an art journey created by your hands.

In this workshop we will explore the essence of place; our experience, our reactions, our sense of being part of a special place…be it home or abroad. Our explorations will carry us through the beautiful Abruzzo countryside and neighboring towns gathering images, scents, sounds, ephemera and treasures which will become our story to be recorded in a mixed media journal made of textiles and paper.

We will explore a variety of traditional and mixed media techniques including:

  • Gelatin mono-printing on textiles and paper
  • Easy photo transfer techniques for both textiles and paper
  • Learn simple sketching techniques
  • Composition and design basics for collage and   photography
  • Free machine stitch sketching and thread painting  creating textile based books (free standing   accordian and traditional book format)
  • Embellishing with beads, stitch, local ephemera and treasures,

This class is open to all levels of textile, paper and mixed-media artists. Basic understanding of sewing machine operation is required but extensive stitch experience is not necessary.
